What is the process of becoming a lawyer like?

I’ve been debating whether or not I want to be a lawyer. I’m currently only in high school, but I’ve been worried about what I want to do in the future. I’ve been considering becoming a lawyer but I don’t really understand how the whole process works.
In order to be a lawyer, what classes do I have to major in? I’d have to take 4 years of regular college and then law school?
Can somebody please explain to me the entire process of becoming a lawyer, and what types of lawyers are there?

Should I answer first set of interrogatories from attorneys?

How and when are divorce attorneys typically paid?

My sister’s attorney is going on and on about how he has "carried" my sister’s case without payment (now pushing K) through her rather lengthy divorce (now going on 6 yrs.). My questions are: Is he being a saint or is this common practice among attorneys, to wait until the end to be paid? Is he obligated to continue with the case even though my sister can’t pay him until after the case has been resolved? (They have considerable assets, but most of it is in property which can’t be sold until the end.) Both parties live in California.

Madgie, thanks, and a good point. I should have stated this, but the ABA can discipline attorneys. It’s not a pure legal issue – it’s a professional license/ethics issue.

But, to my knowledge, you are correct that it is not a legal issue per se.

I used a criminal attorney in a restraining order case and i gave him a retainer. I know he didnt work enough to use all the money. I gave him 00 at per hour. I’ve been asking him for an accounting of the hours and how much money is left over and he won’t give me anything in writing and now he sent me a letter that says criminal attorneys don’t do this. Is that true?
